There are so many different types of games today, and in most cases, they are classified not by their general type of play but by the specific genre or characteristic that they feature.

  • Board Games: These are the games played on a board. This variety includes all sorts of different games from traditional board games like chess, through to card games which use boards (such as Monopoly) to more complex board games with multiple rules (I’m looking at you Settlers Of Catan).Board games are a fun way  to spend time with family and friends.

  • Online puzzles: these types of games can be played on websites or downloaded onto players’ computers/mobile phones, depending on whether they are browser based or downloadable. These games typically require little information other than entering in your name and clicking “Play”.

The Diverse World of Video Games

Video games have categories or genres, therefore, can have multiple subcategories, and even games may fit neatly into more than one category at a time! This diversity is a very real factor when it comes to exploring the nature of video games and why they are as varied as they are. Let’s take a look at just a few of the more popular genres that make up a significant part of the video game market today.

First of all, let’s start with the simplest kind of video games – those that are played on a personal computer. When it comes to the most popular genres, shooting, and role-playing games dominate the top spots. In fact, some of the earliest games to be developed for personal computers required the player to interact with a number of characters. Typically, these characters were to take on different roles, completing quests, battling enemies, and much more. As time progressed, however, the role-playing genre gave way to the action/adventure genres, which featured adventure games set in environments heavily influenced by fantasy fiction, detective stories, etc.

Online Shooters

Shooting games are an interesting subset of action games. In many cases, these types of games require the player to think quickly, make split-second decisions, and have to use every tool at their disposal. For example, a shooter might require the player to aim at a specific target, determine how much time they have before the target is hit, count how much damage was done, and so forth. In many cases, these games require the player to undergo a lot of mental acrobatics in order to play successfully.

Adventure

Adventure games are perhaps the most popular among this subset of genres. As the name implies, these games involve a narrative that involves a character moving from one location to another, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, solving puzzles, etc. In many cases, the adventure game requires the player to develop critical thinking skills in order to succeed. For example, in many role-playing games, you’ll be required to come up with different solutions to problems, depending upon the situation that you are presented with. The plot of the game also tends to develop around the characters you control. For example, you may be a warrior who lives in a medieval world, and your goal will be to save the damsel in distress that you find yourself associated with.

Action

Action games, on the other hand, tend to be more linear than most genres. Typically, these games require the player to move around the screen quickly, take action once the action has been triggered, reload after each action, repeating actions if necessary, making use of a variety of weapons and abilities, etc. These games require the player to engage in a lot of physical activity. In many cases, these action games include elements like racing, which makes them very attractive to male gamers. Moreover, since most action games feature intense violence, there is usually a strong emphasis on player safety.

Strategies

Strategy games tend to fall into the category of simulation. In most types of strategy games, players are required to choose various options in order to win. For example, in the game Tetris, the play consists of laying tiles to form columns. However, in this game, the player is not allowed to change the board’s layout with the moves. In addition, in most strategy games, the different types of available options can help the player to decide on strategies for the duration of the game.
